Tank Lining
Replacing underground fuel storage tank is an expensive business not just in completing the ground works but also in loss of revenue through site closure. Conversely a tank failure and contamination of a watercourse with fuel leads to environmental damage that is unacceptable to any responsible organization.
The use of additives in fuel to minimize the environmental impact of lead has proven to accelerate tank corrosion leading to uncertainty over tank life.
This results from:
- External Corrosion
- Internal Corrosion
- Dipstick Erosion
- Fabrication Defects
- Microbially influenced corrosion (MI
As a result many organizations have turned to relining tanks as a means of assuring the life expectancy of any tank.
There is a range of competitive products available, most are proprietary products developed abroad and installed under license by companies in the UK. Most use a form of fiberglass barrier, which uses the tank as a mould to which the fiberglass structure is applied. To make a double skin a series of ribs are used which provide support for a second skin with the space between filled with air or liquid so that failure of one of the skin causes the vacuum created to be lost. This is detected by measuring equipment and an alarm is sounded.
As you would expect from LCM Environmental Ltd. we have taken a different approach and have developed, with partners, our own proprietary single and double skin systems, which share the following characteristics:
- Resistant to all petroleum fuels and future bio-fuels
- Covered by comprehensive guarantees
- Installed in 4 weeks - minimizing site closure period.
- All tanks are inspected, Non-Destructive Tested (NDT), shot blasted, repaired and primed prior to installation
- Specially selected materials used to minimize danger to staff during installation
- Minimize environmental impact during installation and throughout the life of the system
All of our systems are installed by specially trained LCM staff and with our partner company ABFAD, based in Sunderland, who specializes in confined space work and coating applications.
Below are the specifications of both our single and double skin products,
Single Skin System:
- Tank is shot blasted, inspected, repaired and primed prior to application
- Coating applied
- Post installation inspection
- All pipe work is reinstated
- Comprehensive 10-year guarantee
Double Skin System:
- Developed jointly by LCM and ABFAD
- Covered by a 20-year comprehensive guarantee
- Cost of installation amortized over 20-year period
- Tank is maintenance free for 20-years
- Installed within a 4 week period
- Tank is shot blasted, inspected, repaired and primed prior to application
- Apart from the use of CoponĀ® which is solvent free, there are no harmful substances used during installation minimizing risk to installers and to the environment
- Due to nature of lining used there are no sludge residues which minimizes environmental impact of product change
- The materials used are simple for our technicians to repair so should a third party damage the lining we can simply repair it with minimal loss of use of the tank
- All materials used are recyclable
- The process of building a tank within a tank using the latest up to date materials which are solvent free and are recyclable creates a interstitial space which can be constantly monitored giving the operator an instant indication of any problems
- The tank itself is reinforced by the use of our double skin system and the inner skin vacuum is monitored by a Class A leak detection system
LCM and ABFAD work together to complete all installations and both are ISO 9001:2000 companies, with a combined management experience of 180-years in working in confined spaces and hazardous environments.
